Google recently announced the offline use of Google Maps at the Pixel 9 and Pixel Watch 3 launch. This feature allows users to use map data without an internet connection. Now, Wear OS-based Galaxy Watch owners can also benefit from this innovation and use Google Maps offline.
Google Maps’ offline feature comes to Galaxy Watch
Galaxy Watch users have the chance to use offline map data with the latest Google Maps update. This feature, which is especially available on Wear OS-based smartwatches such as Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Ultra, allows you to use Google Maps data on your smartwatch without an internet connection.
Map data is automatically downloaded when the app is opened and map files are synchronized from your paired Android smartphone. This way, you can navigate on your watch even without an internet connection.
This new offline feature of Google Maps comes with the updated version (11.140.0701.W). After updating, when you open the app, you will be presented with a guide on how to use the offline maps feature. Map data is automatically downloaded while the app is open, and offline maps on your phone are synchronized to the Galaxy Watch.
When you open Google Maps on Galaxy Watch, you will see the ‘Offline Maps’ section just above the ‘Settings’ menu. In this section, you can see the downloaded map regions, how much space this data takes up, and options to delete map data if you want.
There is also a ‘Manage on Phone’ button that allows you to manage this map data on your phone. When your smartwatch is offline, a cloud icon appears at the top of the Google Maps screen, indicating that your watch is not connected to the internet.
Even on models without Galaxy Watch LTE connectivity, this new feature allows you to navigate even when you don’t have your phone with you. This is a big advantage for users, especially in areas without internet access, on long walks or when traveling.
